Best time to visit Kiruna

Kiruna's winter runs from late October to about mid-April. The months differ less in snow than in light: no sunrise at all around Christmas, and almost ten hours of sun by the start of March.

Kiruna lies 145 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, and its winter is long. The first snow often falls in October, but the tourist office says it only comes to stay at the end of the month. From then until about mid-April there is usually enough snow for dog sleds and snowmobiles. Within that window, three things change from month to month: how many hours of light you get, how cold it is, and which seasonal events are on.

The table gives the overview. The sections below explain what each change means for planning a trip.

Polar night and the return of the sun

In early December the sun only clears the horizon for a short spell around midday. On 5 December 2026 it rises at 10:34 and sets at 12:25. The last sunrise of the year comes on 10 December, and from 11 December to 1 January it stays below the horizon. These dates are calculated for the town centre and a flat horizon, so behind a hill the sun can stay hidden for longer.

Polar night does not mean total darkness. The tourist office describes the daytime as a kind of dusk, and moonlight reflected in the snow brightens the nights. On 21 December civil twilight lasts from 08:56 to 14:18, a little over five hours of usable light. Daytime activities in this period are planned around those hours.

After the turn of the year the light comes back fast. The sun rises again on 2 January, and by the end of the month the tourist office counts almost six hours of daylight. On 1 March the sun is up for nearly ten hours, and by 1 April, after the clocks change, for almost fourteen. If you want long days outdoors with snow still on the ground, March and early April give you the most of both.

How cold it gets

The tourist office gives these usual values: around minus 15 degrees in December, minus 20 in January, minus 15 in February, minus 10 in March and minus 5 in April. It asks readers to treat them as hints only, and single days can be much colder. The Icehotel tells its guests that it can drop to minus 30 degrees outside. The coldest temperature measured in Sweden this century was minus 44.6 degrees, recorded on 5 January 2024 at the weather station in Vittangi, a village in Kiruna municipality.

Most tours lend overalls and boots for the time outside. What you wear underneath decides how comfortable you are, which is covered on the page about what to wear in Kiruna in winter.

When the northern lights are out

The tourist office says the aurora can often be seen from the end of August and as late as April. The Swedish Tourist Association, which runs the Aurora Sky Station above Abisko, narrows the best chances to mid-November until mid-March. By April, according to the tourist office's month guide, the chances are no longer good.

Within a night, the most active displays usually appear between 21:00 and 23:00. Clouds sit far below the aurora and hide it completely, which is why evening tours drive to where the sky is clear. The Aurora Sky Station runs its night visits from 19 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. Our guide to the northern lights around Kiruna compares the evening tours in detail.

Icehotel, dogs and snowmobiles

The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is rebuilt every winter from the ice of the Torne River. Its winter season runs from December to April, and the opening package for ICEHOTEL 37 has already sold out. ICEHOTEL 365, kept cold with solar power at about minus 5 degrees, stays open all year, so a visit in October or November still shows you rooms made of ice. More on visiting is on our Icehotel page.

Husky and snowmobile tours depend on snow rather than on the calendar. Once the snow has settled in late autumn they usually run until about mid-April. Light shapes the choice of time slot. In December a morning tour uses the only bright hours, while in March you can ride in the afternoon sun and still be back for an evening aurora trip. For the snowmobile you need a valid car driving licence to drive yourself; without one you ride behind the driver. See husky sledding and snowmobile tours for the options.

Dates to plan around

Kiruna's snow festival has taken place on the last weekend of January since 1986. Its centrepiece is an international snow sculpture contest on Stadshustorget, the square by the town hall, and entry is free. In 2027 it starts on 27 January. The festival pages give both 30 and 31 January as the last day, and the programme is due around the end of 2026, so check before you book.

On 6 February the Sámi celebrate their national day, which marks the first Sámi national assembly in Trondheim in 1917. The same week the town of Jokkmokk holds its winter market from 4 to 6 February 2027, for the 422nd time. Our page on reindeer and Sámi culture lists Sámi hosts near Kiruna.

Flights follow the season

Flights from Stockholm Arlanda run all year and take about 90 minutes. In winter 2026/27 SAS adds direct flights from Copenhagen from December to March, and Eurowings flies from Düsseldorf from February to March. If you want to avoid a change in Stockholm, those months decide your dates. The details are on the page about getting to Kiruna.

A look ahead to summer

From late May to the middle of July the sun does not set in Kiruna at all. This site covers the winter season, but it helps to know that snow lingers: the tourist office warns that a snowy day or two in June is normal.

Questions travellers ask

Which month is best for the northern lights in Kiruna?

The Swedish Tourist Association names mid-November to mid-March as the best window, and the tourist office counts the wider season from late August to April. Clouds hide the aurora, so no month comes with a guarantee.

When is the polar night in Kiruna?

In 2026/27 the sun stays below the horizon from 11 December to 1 January and rises again on 2 January. It is not fully dark: around midday there are a few hours of twilight.

How cold is Kiruna in January?

The tourist office gives about minus 20 degrees as a usual January value and calls its figures rough hints. Colder nights are normal; the Icehotel warns that it can drop to minus 30 degrees.

Is April too late for a winter trip?

Winter activities usually continue until about mid-April if there is enough snow, and the Icehotel season lasts into April. For the northern lights the tourist office says the chances are no longer good by then.

When is the Icehotel open?

The hotel built from river ice has its winter season from December to April. ICEHOTEL 365, a smaller permanent building kept at about minus 5 degrees, is open all year.
